Annual Home Show and Craft Fair offers up new ideas for visitors

Nominations are made from the floor for the executive committee, and the president, vice president, secretary and treasurer are then elected by chapter members. The local chapter strives to fulfill its commitment to these qualities, with club activities focused on serving the needs of the greater school community. Among the annual events the chapter hosts are two American Red Cross blood drives , a movie day and activities with students at The Learning Community, and a Teacher Appreciation Day luncheon. The student members also volunteer with the Fulton-Montgomery Home Show and Craft Fair, as well as Habitat for Humanity, and they work with other school clubs to help raise money for charitable causes and organizations. Elective classes team up to create ‘Dark Forest’ photoshoot
The show is one of three fundraisers by the town youth commission to support the building of the town park. The town borrowed $500,000 to be matched by a state grant for the park, said Keith Buchanan, coordinator of the show. “No taxpayer dollars are being used to build the park,” he said. More fundraisers—a golf tourney in June and trunk sales in July and September—are planned, he said. The Broadalbin Youth Commission was formed in the 1950's to provide all youth a positive opportunity for involvement in conventional activities such as sports and recreation. The BYC is funded by the Town and Village of Broadalbin, fund raising, a network of volunteers, with support facilities from the BPCSD.

The Home Show and Craft Fair occupied most of the high school hallways and auditoriums and included both crafts and heating and cooling, solar panel vendors, and outdoor equipment, to name a few. One of the Nut Job students, Tyler Abrams said he wants to go into engineering or robotic technology but emphasized that teamwork skills really matter. Chapter members meet monthly — or more often if needed — and the organization operates with the same rules as a non-profit.

Youths between 15 and 18 can be junior firefighters to learn about firefighting and can become firefighters at 18, he said. Cornell added that the company has gained four adults and two youths through recruiting. Other youths, from Broadalbin-Perth and Saratoga 4H, were showing off the robots they built and how they work, which were designed for the FIRST competition . Around Broadalbin Perth Middle School
The BYC is governed by a Board of Directors from the community that includes the Town Supervisor, Village Mayor, Superintendent of Schools, and a representative from the Baptist, Catholic and Methodist Churches as well as a few active community members. Board Meetings are held once a month and are open to the public. “I love craft fairs and want to support my daughters’ school,” said Desiree Sullivan of Broadalbin. B-P’s summer production is a true community collaboration, featuring students, district employees, and recent graduates under the direction of B-P Elementary Drama Club director Jen Szumowski. To be eligible for membership, a student must have a 90 percent grade point average at BPHS by the end of his or her sophomore year.
Nomination letters are typically sent home to qualifying students the summer before they enter 11th grade. Students must meet service requirements and submit completed applications by the deadline in October. Applications are then evaluated against the national standards by a council of five BPHS teachers. The Broadalbin-Perth High School chapter of the National Honor Society operates under the principles of the national organization, recognizing students for excelling in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership and character. The Broadalbin-Kennyetto Volunteer Fire Company was at the show with a manikin dressed as a firefighter. Company member Brian Cornell said they were aiming to create more awareness of fire safety as well as recruiting new members.
